Built in 1924, the Old Craggy Prison was one of 61 prisons chosen to house inmates working to build roads in the late 1930s. While it closed in 1987, a Correction Enterprises Laundry continues to operate on-site at the hands of 56 supervised minimum-custody inmates. This bit of detail explained why we witnessed steam billowing from behind the building….an unexpected sight on a property that appeared to be long-forgotten. It was eerily quiet on the grounds except for the release of the steam, which seemed to be the only evidence of life. We later realized, of course, that there was an abundance of life beyond those razor-wire fences and cold concrete walls.
