ON TUESDAY March 2, 1915 at 8:30 am an explosion occured in the No. 3 mine, located in layland wv, resulting in the death of 112 person, 111 on the inside of the mine, and one on the outside. At the time of the explosion there were 164 persons working in the mine. There were several hundred miners and rescue workers on scene ready to aid in rescue. About 8 am saturday morning the workers had cleared the main entrance of the mine. When to their surprise out walked 5 miners, one of them was carrying a note which had information about the location of 41 more miners. Miners hurried in andbegan working on removing a big piece of slate that was blocking the entrance, about a hundred feet down they removed a second piece and freed the men trapped below.
